Role of Imagination – Is What True?
“Every myth is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble.”
Joseph Campbell
The human mind is very powerful. Imagination plays an extremely important role in creating the narrative. This is also significant when we use our imagination to perceive a future. We are the only species that are able to imagine what is not there, (take religion, for example), or give meaning to symbols, words and images. Each person has their own unique perception of universal symbols that mean something very special only to them. We often downplay the use of vivid imagination as being childish, but we behold successful innovators as being “visionaries.” This is a direct contradiction and only serves to discourage those who if given the encouragement could make viable contributions into the world.
The primary language of our subconscious mind is in metaphors, symbols and pictures, whereas the conscious mind’s properties are in the spoken language, numbers and words. Sometimes conscious judgment leaks through, and the thought comes: “Is it true? Am I making this up?”
If you are making this up, why not make up something you want? Why not create an experience where you can keep focus, experience joy, satisfaction and love?
Set the judgment aside, and continue the process. Experience yourself inside the journey of your life and enjoy the experience. Allow the imagination to create a world of possibilities regardless of whether it makes sense or not. There is plenty of time to prune back the ideas once you begin to take action.
